Yes, it is important to think about the collective good and to take care of people who do not have access to opportunities through poverty. Trying to create a fair society is important to me.

The word ‘socialism’ seems to mean different things to different people. But in general, I agree with Dawn. It’s important that society thinks collectively about the problems people face and how these can be addressed. This needs to be balanced against respect for people to make free choices and lead their own lives. How exactly to strike that balance is a hard question and is at the centre of lots of the political debates we have.

I think that we must all consider how we treat all members of society. Extreme socialism didn’t work in the Soviet Union, but that’s not to say that ‘socialism’ (which means different things to different people) is bad or doomed to failure. Some people are born luck, and have caring parents, live in a nice neighbourhood, and had teachers, friends and family that helped them to thrive. Not everyone is born with that luck. A good society looks after those who are less fortunate.

I don’t think any system is good or bad as a whole; it depends on the people that implement it and the way it’s implemented (i.e. which ideas are emphasised, what decisions are made…). I think socialism is a really complex concept that can refer to realities as diverse as Cuba and some nordic countries in Europe, so I don’t think you can reduce it to a simple thing. I believe that, well implemented, socialist ideas like accessible medical services for all, free education for everyone, labour laws that protect the workers and having a safe, secure enviroment to live organised by the government are great ideas, and I wouldn’t mind paying higher taxes for them. I think if we improve society as a whole, we’re all bound to end up winners.

I would agree with the Psychologists below, it’s important to think about how collectivism can be used in positive ways to make things better and develop the way humans live. Therefore, I’d say yes, socialism is good.
